how to use freebies
The intent of these freebies are to provide fun, simple graphics for scientists across all levels of design experience to incorporate clean storytelling with ease into their communications. Feel free to use them, unrestricted, in any way you like.
Upon clicking the image you would like to use, it will automatically download to your computer as a .zip file. Opening this file will present you with a folder containing the graphic in three different file formats, allowing for a wide range of use:
.jpg
• commonly used in digital photography and on the web
• file is rasterized, meaning it is made of only one “layer” and cannot be made larger without loss of image quality
• background is white and nontransparent
• ideal for “quick and dirty” use in a presentation or on the web
• not good for high quality or large scale printing like posters
.png
• also commonly used on the web
• another form of rasterized image but that has a transparent background
• ideal for overlaying with other images for presentations or web
• not good for high quality or large scale printing like posters
.svg
• stands for “scalable vector graphic”
• able to import into vector graphics programs such as Adobe Illustrator
• being a vector means it can be scaled to any size without any quality loss, and contains independently editable layers
• ideal for color and line weight customization
• suitable for high quality and large scale print as well as web and presentations, but must be exported as different file format first
